Ann Bishop
Ann Bishop changed the face of television in South Florida and paved the way for women in broadcast news.
Born Harriette Himes, Ann was raised in Rochester, New York. Ann was hired at WPLG in 1970. She was a street reporter for 6 years before blazing a trail to the anchor desk and becoming the first woman to anchor the evening news in a major market.
She anchored at WPLG for more than two decades and was known for her passion and compassion.
Ann traveled to cover big stories around the world, including earthquakes, political conventions, the travels of Pope John Paul II and the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
Ann battled Colon Cancer for more than a year, before passing away in 1997. There is a Memorial Scholarship Fund in her name at Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida.
Decades later, women in our industry still credit Ann for their own career success.
Ann did not graduate from college or have a journalism degree. She just called herself a "nosey broad"
